Welcome to the Net-Lawyers Mailing List!
WHAT IS NET-LAWYERS?
Net-Lawyers is a moderated, mailing list designed for lawyers, librarians, law students, paralegals, and other interested persons to discuss how to use the internet in their respective professions. It is NOT designed to allow subscribers to discuss substantive areas of "internet law" although occassionally threads develop for short periods of time on that topic.
The list has been developed and is moderated by Lewis Rose, a partner in the Washington, DC office of Arent Fox Kintner Plotkin & Kahn. If you have any problems or questions about the list, send an email message to me at
lewrose@arentfox.com

VOLUNTARY SUBSCRIPTIONS
To gather some money for future years, I am going to accept -- not require
-- voluntary subscription fees. If you find this list useful over the next several months and believe you will continue on it for some time to come, I would accept from those of you willing or in a position to do so, to send a check or money order in any amount you percieve to be appropriate in United States funds to:
Lewis Rose
14905 Forest Landing Circle
Rockville, MD 20850
I expect to plow all the funds back into net-lawyers. No money will be paid to me personally for my role in moderating/owning the list. Depending on the level of funds received, I expect to either fund another year at LSoft, or purchase a workstation to devote to the list and its archives, and to cover programming and other expenses in setting up and maintaining the list and archives.
There is NO REQUIREMENT that you send a subscription fee. However, doing so will be a great assistance to me to provide the resources to keep net-lawyers going and growing.
My thanks go out to the many subscribers who have sent me checks to date. It's a rare mailing list that generates such loyalty.
HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE?
Please save this message for future reference, especially if this is the first time you subscribe to an electronic mailing list. If you ever need to leave the list, you will find the necessary instructions below. Perhaps more importantly, saving a copy of this message (and of all future subscription notices from other mailing lists) in a special mail folder will give you instant access to the list of mailing lists that you are subscribed to. This may prove very useful the next time you go on vacation and need to leave the lists temporarily so as not to fill up your mailbox while you are away!
To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to net-lawyers@peach.ease.lsoft.com. This is called "sending mail to the list", because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies for all the people who have subscribed. This address
net-lawyers@peach.ease.lsoft.com is also called the "list address". You must never try to send any command to that address, as it would be distributed to all the people who have subscribed. All commands must be sent to the
"LISTSERV address", listserv@peach.ease.lsoft.com. It is very important to understand the difference between the two, but fortunately it is not complicated. The LISTSERV address is like a FAX number, and the list address is like a normal phone line. If you accidentally make your FAX call someone's voice line, the person receiving the call will be annoyed. If you do this regularly, however, your victim will probably get seriously upset and send you a nasty complaint. It is the same with mailing lists, with the difference that you are calling hundreds or thousands of people at the same time, so a lot more people get annoyed if you use the wrong number.
You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF NET-LAWYERS" command to net-lawyers@peach.ease.lsoft.com. You can also tell LISTSERV how you want it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. If you do not trust the system, send a "SET NET-LAWYERS REPRO" command and LISTSERV will send you a copy of your own messages, so that you can see that the message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way. After a while you may find that this is getting annoying, especially if your mail program does not tell you that the message is from you when it informs you that new mail has arrived from NET-LAWYERS. If you send a "SET NET-LAWYERS ACK NOREPRO" command, LISTSERV will mail you a short acknowledgement instead, which will look different in your mailbox directory. With most mail programs you will know immediately that this is an acknowledgement you can read later. Finally, you can turn off acknowledgements completely with "SET NET-LAWYERS NOACK NOREPRO".
Posts sent to this list are automatically archived. You can get a list of the available archive files by sending an
"INDEX NET-LAWYERS" command to LISTSERV@peach.ease.lsoft.com. You can then order these files with a "GET NET-LAWYERS LOGxxxx" command, or using LISTSERV's database search facilities. Send an "INFO DATABASE" command for more information on the latter.
This list is available in digest form. If you wish to receive the digested version of the postings, just issue a SET NET-LAWYERS DIGEST command.
Please note that it is not presently possible for anybody to determine that you are signed up to the list through the use of the "REVIEW" command, which returns the e-mail address and name of all the subscribers.
More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO REFCARD" command to LISTSERV@PEACH.EASE.LSOFT.COM.
Thanks for subscribing to Net-Lawyers. Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can be of any help to you.
