FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PENNSYLVANIA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS TO INVESTIGATE ABUSE AT PRISON
WAYNESBURG, PA, April 9th, 1998-
Secretary of Corrections Martin F. Horn today announced the
investigation of 40 staff members at SCI Greene for alleged abuse of
inmates. SCI Greene is a maximum security prison in Southwestern
Pennsylvania.
A spokesperson for the Greene County chapter of the Pennsylvania Prison
Society, Randall D Gauger, said the move by the DOC is a welcomed
development: "We have investigated dozens of complaints of abuse at
SCI Greene over the last years. Most always the results of the prison's
investigations has laid the blame on the inmates. We applaud the DOC
for now investigating these alleged abuses. We would wish that an
independent investigation also be instituted so that we get to the
bottom of this situation."
A report on alleged abuses at the prison was made to Amnesty
International General Secretary Pierre Sane last year. Mr. Sane has
expressed concern over the conditions at the prison. In March, Mr.
Sane sharply criticized the DOC for the shakedown of death row inmates
at the prison that resulted in destruction of personal property,
denial of timely access to legal materials and reduction in many other
privileges.
