ABOUT THE CNI-COPYRIGHT FORUM:
Copyright issues pervade our lives affecting everything from the labels on the cans of soft drinks to the things we watch on television to all the things we read. It has a tremendous effect on networking activities as evidenced by the number of lists which discuss copyright issues from time to time. But it is often misunderstood, subject to easy misinterpretation and at times very complicated. Many people simply throw out copyright questions to any list hoping to get an answer that makes some sense. Others who have an interest in copyright per se find themselves trying to monitor dozens of lists in order to get into a regular flow of copyright discussions. This list is being organized to give those who ask, answer, and discuss copyright questions of any type a forum for discussion. Discussion will not be limited to any one area such as copyright for electronic materials.

Potential areas of discussion include:

o What is in the public domain?

o How do you tell if something is in the public domain?

o Under what conditions can a document be scanned and posted for
anonymous ftp without running into copyright problems?

o How does copyright affect distance education?

o What are the effects of the Kinko's v. Basics Books case on copying
in education?

o What will the effects of the Feist opinion be?

o and anything else about copyright in a networked environment

and related topics that anyone wants to discuss.

o Notices about new or interesting articles, books, etc concerning
copyright are welcome.

TO SEND MAIL TO THE CNI-COPYRIGHT FORUM:
By sending electronic mail to the address CNI-COPYRIGHT@CNI.ORG, you will distribute messages to the other participants of this list. The CNI-COPYRIGHT forum is moderated, and as a result postings may be delayed by up to one full day before they are approved for distribution to the list. Any posting may be withheld from a list at the discretion of the moderator, if it is deemed to be beyond the intended scope of the list.

REPLY FUNCTION:
Outgoing mail on the CNI-COPYRIGHT forum is configured with a "Reply-To:" field which will direct mail to the list. Using the automatic reply function on your local mail system should return your reply to ALL THE READERS OF THIS FORUM, not just to the person who sent the original posting. Please do not use the automatic reply functions on your local mailers unless you intend everyone to see your comments. If you wish to communicate with the original sender, locate his/her address in the "From:" field and send a new piece of mail to him/her. The forum moderater will attempt to screen notes sent to the forum in error, but this is not always fool-proof. Please use discretion in composing your replies.

ARCHIVES OF THE CNI-COPYRIGHT FORUM:
Archives of the CNI-COPYRIGHT forum are automatically maintained using the ListProcessor, and are available through FTP, Gopher, or the Listprocessor itself. Information for FTP or Gopher access is contained in the URLs below.

URL: ftp://ftp.cni.org/CNI/forums/cni-copyright
URL: gopher://gopher.cni.org:70/11/cniftp/forums/cni-copyright

Requests to retrieve or search archives from the ListProcessor can
be submitted via e-mail. All commands submitted via electronic mail should be placed in the body of the message, not in the Subject field of the header. Please omit extaneous text, such as signiature files from the body of the message.

To receive an index of all files in the archive of CNI-COPYRIGHT,
send this command (as an e-mail) note to LISTPROC@CNI.ORG

INDEX CNI-COPYRIGHT

Files can then be retrieved by mailing a GET request to LISTPROC@CNI.ORG

USING INTERACTIVE LISTPROCESSOR (ILP):
One can interact with the ListProcessor either via electronic mail, as mentioned above, or using the Interactive List Processor (ILP). Some commands are more efficient to issue to the ListProcessor using ILP, and response is immediate. To interact with the ListProcessor, point an ILP client at host "a.cni.org" using standard port 372. If you do not have an ILP client on your system, you can telnet to port 372 on host a.cni.org.

csh> telnet a.cni.org 372

Login using the e-mail address you wish to have mail returned to. If your account is already subscribed to a ListProcessor list, you will have to use the password assigned to your account when it was configured for that list. If you are uncertain what your password is, please send e-mail to the technical contact person listed below. However, it often will take several days for this person to process mail for a list if it is very busy, so please be patient.

ABOUT LISTPROCESSOR:
The Corporation for Research and Educational Networking has acquired ownership rights to the Unix list-management software developed by Anastasios Kotsikonas ("Tasos") and known as "ListProcessor" and "ListProc". Version 6.0c (the last free release) of ListProcessor remains available at no cost for non-commercial use (ftp://cs-ftp.bu.edu/pub/listserv). CREN has continued to develop this software, and the Coalition is currently using version 7.2 of the CREN ListProcessor.

To begin learning more about the system, the commands it will accept, and its many features, please send one or more of the following commands to LISTPROC@CNI.ORG

LISTS

No subject line is required (or suggested) when communicating with the ListProcessor (LISTPROC@CNI.ORG), although if you include one it will be ignored - unless it contains a stopword such as "error". After your request has been processed, you will receive a reply from the ListProcessor reporting on the status of the submitted command.

THE USE OF VACATION PROGRAMS AND THE CNI-COPYRIGHT FORUM:
The ListProcessor will attempt to screen messages from the list that are delivered as the result of an auto-reply feature such as the vacation program. However, not all vacation messages are properly trapped all of the time, and the submission of these messages to the list can result in a condition known as an infinite loop. For every message your account receives, it sends a reply back to this forum -- which in turn sends you another note.

For this reason, if you wish to use a vacation program while you
are away from your e-mail, please postpone delivery of your mail for this list. Mail can be postponed by sending this command (as an e-mail note) to the LISTPROC@CNI.ORG

set <listname> mail postpone

e.g. SET CNI-COPYRIGHT MAIL POSTPONE

When you return, or otherwise wish to resume delivery of your mail, please send this command (again, as an e-mail note) to the address
LISTPROC@CNI.ORG

set <listname> mail ack

e.g. SET CNI-COPYRIGHT MAIL ACK

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON THIS FORUM:
All questions regarding the substance of, or policies related to, the postings on this forum should be directed to the list's moderator Mary Brandt Jensen <mjensen@sunset.backbone.olemiss.edu>

All queries regarding difficulties with mail or requests for technical assistance with the ListProcessor should be addressed to the list owner Craig A. Summerhill <listmgr@cni.org>

ADDITIONAL RELEVANT INFORMATION:
In addition to the FTP, Gopher, and ListProcessor access to archives of this list, the Coalition also archives CNI-COPYRIGHT using a full-text indexing system called BRS/SEARCH. In order to search the archives using this system:

telnet a.cni.org

login: brsuser (all lower case, no password required)

Once you have logged in, select '1' on the main menu to "Search/Select a Database" and then choose the 'COPY' database. Results can be mailed back to yourself using the 'P/E -- Print Email' function. Be sure to specify your e-mail address using a fully qualified domain name

e.g. user1234 #not valid

user1234@host.domain #valid

Finally, Terry Carroll has written a Copyright FAQ. We attempt to keep the most recent one available in the CNI-COPYRIGHT archives at all times. You may wish to consult this FAQ prior to posting a question to the list. The FAQ is stored in six parts. To retrieve the first part, send this command (as an e-mail note) to the address LISTPROC@CNI.ORG

GET CNI-COPYRIGHT FAQ.PART1

The other files are named FAQ.PART2, FAQ.PART3, etc.
